My Goodness, What’s in My Guinness… Fish Bladder From the Fining Process?

“Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” is a popular show during lunch time at the office. I was watching on Monday with a few coworkers, and an interesting question was asked on the show. I’m paraphrasing, but it went something like, …’This beer is not a suitable option for vegetarians as it contains a trace amount of fish bladder…?’ Whaaaat? Well, the answer, unfortunately, was Guinness. Check out the below article.

This probably won’t deter me from drinking Guinness as much as learning that in the US it’s brewed with HFCS, but it does bring up an interesting thought… what really is IN some of our beloved craft beers? Another article I read this week mentioned that arsenic is in the water that some brews and wines are made with, which we ultimately consume, and considering the lax beverage ingredient labeling laws, I do sometimes wonder… what am I actually drinking? Brew for thought.
